what is holy orders?
Holy Orders is the Sacrament in which a man is ordained a deacon, priest, or bishop. Through Holy Orders, a priest receives as a gift a definite power and a mission for his brothers and sisters in faith. Through his ordination, the transforming, healing, saving power of Christ is grafted onto him. The Sacrament of Holy Orders has three degrees: bishop (episcopate), priest (presbyterate), and deacon (diaconate).
What happens in episcopal ordination?
In episcopal ordination, the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders is conferred upon a priest. He is ordained a successor of the Apostles and enters the college of bishops. He becomes responsible for the entire Church and is appointed to offices of teaching, sanctifying, and governing- the three jobs of all bishops.
What happens in priestly ordination?
In priestly ordination, the bishop calls down God's power upon the candidates for ordination. It imprints an indelible seal on the souls of the men that can never be lost. During the celebration of a Holy mass, the ordination of priests begins when the candidates are called by name. After the bishop's homily, the candidate promises obedience to the bishop and his successors. The actual ordination takes place through the imposition of the bishop's hands and his prayer. Once ordained, the priest can proclaim the Word of God, administer the Sacraments, and celebrate the Holy Eucharist.
What happens in diaconal ordination?
In diaconal ordination the candidate is appointed to a special service within the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He represents Christ as the one who came, "not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Over the centuries the diaconate became a degree of Holy Orders on the way to the presbyterate, but now it is once again an independent vocation for both celibates and married men. Diaconal ordination makes a lifelong, indelible mark on the soul of the ordained man.

parish priests & religious priests
Parish priests, or secular priests, are priests who are ordained for a particular diocese and who serve in parishes. At their ordination as deacons they are affiliated with a particular diocese or archdiocese. They make a promise to obey their bishop and to remain celibate. Parish priests take one vow, a vow of chastity. A parish priest lives in society with a few other parish priests. They celebrate weekday and Sunday masses and they can celebrate the sacraments.
The title of a religious priest refers to the form of life these priests live. A religious priest belongs to a community of men bound together by faith and their vows. A religious priest takes three vows, a vow of poverty, a vow of chastity and a vow of obedience. Poverty means that they do not own things individually, but rather as a group. Chastity means that they do not marry and remain celibate. Obedience means that they do what is expected of them and obey their superiors. The priests may help out around the Church.
